Description

Berberine is a food supplement, the primary bioactive ingredient in various plants such as Berberis vulgaris (barberry) and Phellodendron amurense (Amur cork tree). It comes from the roots, stems, and bark of various plants. According to inscriptions found on clay tablets in the library of the Assyrian emperor Ashurbanipal, one of the earliest uses of berberine-containing fruits dates back to 650 BC. These tablets refer to the blood-cleansing effects of berberine-containing fruits. In Ayurvedic medicine, berberine was used to improve health and 'open the mind'. The plant's use in Chinese medicine dates back over 3000 years, and its use in European countries has a similarly long history.

Today, berberine is widely used in Asian countries (mainly in China) due to its good clinical and safety profile. In the USA, the FDA considers berberine safe for human use.
